Info for Golden
In a world hyper-focussed on who can play the fastest, who’s the most famous, and who’s travelled the furthest, maybe it’s time to slow down and savour the moment. Future Backup dares to do just that, creating gentle, thoughtful melodies on vibraphones, pad-synths, and relaxed but precise drums. The result is not just music – it’s a mood. Radically soft indie-jazz with an electronic twist; stripped back, yet rich with warmth, maturity and depth. These sonic qualities are nicely reflected in the title of their latest album, and just like the mineral, Golden is radiant and impressive.
This German trio is made up of Volker Heuken on vibraphone, (Jazz Prize winner of the City of Leipzig), Lukas Grossmann on organ/synth, (Bruckner) and Johannes Koch on drums (Life is Great). Between them, the three have played countless shows and festivals including Jazzahead!, Berlin Jazzfest, Hurricane & Southside Festival, earning significant media attention along the way.
Future Backup’s music may have a dreamy quality, but their ambition is anything but. The trio means serious business working with producer Jonas Holle (Milky Chance). Together with mastering by Joe Joaquin (Annenmaykantereit, Judith Holofernes) the subtle pop influence lends a universal appeal and wonderful charm to the final sound. Future Backup’s combines effortless, tone-curation like Nina Sinephro with meticulous production similar to the French band Air. Like basking in yellow rays of sunlight after a long winter – lay back, bliss out, and let the delicate beauty of Golden lift your spirits!

Johannes Koch
Growing up in a musical household, Johannes started playing drums at the age of 6.
In his late teens he was part of the indie band ‚Paper & Places‘, releasing the album ‚No Home‘ (Grand Hotel van Cleef) in 2013 and appearing on national television and radio (ZDF, BR, NDR, rBB…).
After the band split up, Johannes went to study Jazz-Drums at the Musikhochschule Nuremberg and at the renowned Jazz-Institut in Berlin.
As sideman in Kira Linn’s Linntett he contributed to several albums, playing concerts at festivals (Jazzahead, Jazztage Burghausen, Jazzralley Düsseldorf) and touring Europe and Southeast Asia.
His collaborations in Jazz include Jorge Rossy, Domenic Landolf, Rich Perry, Phillip Dornbusch, Phil Donkin, Julian und Roman Wasserfuhr and others while also playing for pop acts like the band ‚Bruckner‘.
During the pandemic he started composing for his own Band ‚Life is Great‘, playing their first tour in March 2023 where they also recorded their first album. 'Option A' was released in December 2024 on 'Owlway Records'.
