‘Ulf Krüger is Skiffle in Germany.’ Any musician with roots in this music would savour such praise from the King of Skiffle, LONNIE DONEGAN, who was not only the grand master of Skiffle, but also a role model in the early 1960s for an entire generation of young musicians who later heralded the heyday of beat music: Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Van Morrison, to name but a few. And the fact that the Beatles also played Skiffle under the name “The Quarrymen” before their international career is now part of music history. This is where Ulf Krüger, multi-instrumentalist and singer, comes in, creating a very personal monument to his very personal musical history: 18 famous Skiffle songs.

Skiffle is a style of music that originated in the United States in the 1920s as improvised party music and experienced a huge revival in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. It combines jazz, blues, folk and country with simple, often homemade instruments such as washboards, tea chest basses and harmonicas, alongside guitars and banjos, and paved the way for the British rock revolution. Musicians such as Lonnie Donegan (‘King of Skiffle’) turned skiffle into a worldwide movement that inspired many young people to make music themselves – including later rock icons such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Skiffle is the cradle of English beat.
