Info for Ukrainian Piano Quintets

This album represents pianist Violina Petrychenko's longstanding efforts to promote Ukrainian music in Europe. The programme introduces two composers who represent both poles of Ukrainian musical life - Borys Liatoshynsky (1895 -1968) from central Ukraine and Vasyl Barvinsky (1888-1963) from the west of the country.

Borys Liatoshynsky was a leading member of the new generation of 20th century Ukrainian composers and was awarded a number of accolades including two Stalin prizes and Vasyl Barvinsky was one of the first Ukrainian composers to gain worldwide recognition. His pieces were published not only in the Soviet Union, but also in Vienna, Leipzig, New York and Japan.

The recording presents two of the most ambitious Ukrainian piano quintets, which open up different perspectives on one of the most important genres of chamber music, each influenced by unique historical and artistic circumstances.

The Phoenix String Quartet was established in 2008 in Lviv (Ukraine) by talented musicians, who also perform as soloists and had received numerous awards on International Competitions. They are joined on this recording by renowned pianist Violina Petrychenko who is dedicated to promoting Ukrainian music and culture and is the artistic director of the "Sounds of Ukraine" festival and a soloist with the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Phoenix String Quartet
is one of Ukraine's outstanding chamber music ensembles. Founded in 2006 in Lviv, the musicians have made a name for themselves not only as brilliant soloists, but above all as a perfectly coordinated ensemble that captivates audiences with its passion and expressiveness. Their concert activities regularly take them to prestigious festivals in Europe, where they are celebrated for their captivating interpretations.

The quartet is known for its virtuosity, deep emotionality, and exceptional ensemble harmony. Since its official founding in 2008, it has performed on prestigious stages in Europe, Asia, and America, winning acclaim from both audiences and critics.

The members of the ensemble are:
Mykola Havjuk, violin
Petro Tytiajev, violin
Anna Bura, viola
Denys Lytvynenko, cello

In 2023, the quartet was awarded the Lyudkevych Prize for its contribution to the promotion of Ukrainian music. Together with pianist Violina Petrychenko, the musicians present the program "Ukrainian Quintet," which has already been heard in the philharmonic halls of Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and other cities.

The quartet was also the first to perform the piano quintets by Vasyl Barvinsky and Borys Lyatoshynsky in Belgium and Germany. The musicians are currently working on recording an album of these unique works, continuing their mission to bring the diversity of Ukrainian chamber music to the world.
