Info for Radu Paladi & Zdenek Fibich String Quartets

The Martfeld Quartet offers a charming comparison of two little-known composers: Radu Paladi used in his first quartet (1956) a neoclassical style, which combines the traditional forms with melodic and rhythmic elements of Romanian folklore. In contrast, the Czech Zdenĕk Fibich was influenced by German Romanticism in his second quartet (1878).

„Coviello’s sound quality is first-class and an ideal balance has been struck between the four instrumentalists. The Martfeld Quartett, who play with consummate polish and panache, have these works at their fingertips and their virile accounts are deeply committed. These convincing performances will surely win these lesser-known works new friends.“ (MusicWeb International)

Martfeld Quartett

The Martfeld Quartett
was founded in 1980 by members of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra. The name of the quartet is closely associated with the Martfeld Manor in Schwelm, where, for many years, it has had its own successful concert series as Quartet in Residence. The current members of the quartet have been playing together since 2010. It now consists of members of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and the Gürzenich Orchester Cologne, all of whom share a love of chamber music and of the large and significant repertoire for string quartet.

With their curiosity and keenness to experiment, the musicians also focus on the works of lesser-known and contemporary composers. The Martfeld Quartet has performed with such famous musicians as Sadao Harada (Tokyo String Quartet), Wolfgang Guttler, Toshiyuki Kamioka und Florence Millet.
