Metronome Recordings releases an exciting new release from two leading international performers in the arena of Baroque Music. In this double album complete format Rodolfo Richter violin and James Johnstone harpsichord perform the 6 Sonatas for Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach BWV 1014 -1019. Rodolfo Richter teachers baroque violin at the Royal College of Music in London. He has recorded as a violin soloist for Channel Classics, Harmonia Mundi USA, Linn Records and Hyperion. Metronome is delighted to welcome him onto the label with its baroque keyboard artist James Johnstone as a leading Bach interpreter James Johnstone recent release of the Art of Fugue is making waves (METCD1111-1112). He also has a project to record the complete Bach Organ works with Metronome Recordings While we associate Bach for his mastery of the keyboard instruments, he also played the violin to such a high level that his initial employment at the court of Weimar was as an ensemble violinist rising later to concertmaster. The testimony of his sons refers to Bach playing the violin “purely and powerfully” into his old age and three violins were registered as his chattels in his will.

Rodolfo Richter
was trained as a modern violinist with Klaus Wusthoff and Pinchas Zuckermann and has studied composition with Hans Joachim Koellreutter and Pierre Boulez. He studied baroque violin with Monica Huggett at the Royal Academy of Music and has been performing with most of Britain's leading period ensembles. Rodolfo has broadcast live recitals for WFMT Radio (Chicago), BBC Radio 3 (London), MDR (Leipzig) and Radio 3 (Brugges) and was a prize-winner at the prestigious International Early Music Competition for Ensembles in Bruges (2000) and at the Antonio Vivaldi International Violin Competition (2001). He has recorded "Vivaldi Solo Concertos" for Opus 111 and he has been invited to lead many orchestras, including the Hannover Band, St. James Baroque, the Academy of Ancient Music and the English Concert.

In 2002 he joined Palladians and as a soloist and chamber musician Rodolfo has performed throughout the UK and toured extensively in Europe, USA, South America, Australia, the Middle and Far East (including such prestigious venues as London's Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebow in Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Wien, Sidney's City Hall, Chicago's Orchestra Hall and the Alice Tuly Hall in New York).

His forthcoming projects include recordings of string quartets by Beethoven, Schubert, Webern and Mendelssohn.

James Johnstone
After studies in London (Jill Severs) and The Hague (Ton Koopman), harpsichordist and organist James Johnstone has forged a career as recitalist, chamber musician, continuo player and teacher, performing and recording with all the major UK-based period instrument ensembles, as well as groups in Germany, Canada, Italy and Holland. As a recitalist he has performed in Great Britain, Denmark, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Israel, Equador, Colombia and the United States.

He was a principal keyboard player for the Gabrieli Consort and Players for 17 years, a member of the chamber ensemble Florilegium for 10 years, and for 16 years with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir. Recently he has joined the Constellation Choir and Orchestra.

James teaches early keyboards at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

In 2016 he began a critically acclaimed series of recordings for Metronome Recordings, including the complete organ works of Bach. Upcoming releases will include Bach’s Art of Fugue on harpsichord, the six violin and harpsichord sonatas with Rodolfo Richter and further volumes of Bach organ music.
