The Haydn recordings by conductor and violinist Derek Solomons with the ensemble L'Estro Armonico from the 1980s were pioneering achievements. The musicians' playing on period instruments was praised for its mercurial brilliance, impressive flexibility, unexpected transparency and inspiring freshness. And this at a time when these works usually came across as rather armoured and large orchestral.
"It was this (Derek Solomons) now completely forgotten Englishman who started a sensational recording project at the beginning of the 1980s. It was to be the first complete recording of all Haydn symphonies on period instruments. For this undertaking, Solomons called together his chamber orchestra L'Estro Armonico, consisting of top London soloists. ... Between 1980 and 1986, 49 of the more than one hundred symphonies were recorded - above all the very early ones and the majority from Haydn's "Sturm und Drang" phase. ...Derek Sololmons and L'Estro Armonico offer a Haydn in top form with every note - and celebrate him and his spiritual refinement without frills and showmanship, but in top form."
