Info for Mirror Music

Michael A. Muller, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of Balmorhea, has immersed himself in composing and released his DG debut Mirror Music. Reflection is the theme of this album. Ten tracks based on Muller's ambient compositions were created in collaboration with eleven artists. Muller wrote them on the Mellotron, an Oberheim Two-Voice synthesiser and a Rhodes organ and shared them with the musicians, each taking a part in a particular piece. Mirror Music opens with the tactile, open-tuned twelve-string guitar of Danny Paul Grody, segues into the iridescent pedal steel guitar of Chuck Johnson and leads into the vocal atmospherics of Vestals. This is followed by Jonathan Sielaff's bass clarinet and Ilyas Ahmed's guitar, the lonely desert sounds of Douglas McCombs from Tortoise, the shimmering rhythms of Indonesian-Australian percussionist Rama Parwata, the modular synthesiser reflections of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, the velvety vocals of Hania Rani, the soft sound modulations of Jon Porras and finally the soulful cello of Clarice Jensen.

"On Mirror Music, Michael creates a world that feels to me both familiar and alien, like I'm wandering the savannahs on a distant planet. While listening, I spend half the time wondering, 'what is that sound?' and the other half asking myself, 'what is this feeling?'. — Hrishikesh Hirway, Song Exploder
