Info for Mozart: Horn Concertos Nos. 1-4

The Brandenburger Theater presents the first album of the Brandenburger Symphoniker under chief conductor Andreas Spering: "Mozart - Horn Concertos" with soloist Sibylle Mahni. This recording of the four horn concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the result of many years of work and was made in July 2023 at the Brandenburger Theater for the "Prospero Classical" label, recorded by sound engineer Jonas Niederstadt.

The four concertos for horn and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart form an important part of the repertoire for horn. Here they are interpreted by Sibylle Mahni, Professor of Horn at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, and the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andreas Spering in a captivating, emotional and, above all, "historically informed" performance.

Mozart wrote his horn concertos for Joseph Leitgeb, a good friend of the Mozart family, during his time as a freelance composer in Vienna (1781-1791). The usual numbering and chronological order, whereby the first concerto is referred to as K. 412, the second as K. 417, the third as K. 447 and the fourth as K. 495, has turned out to be incorrect. This has to do with the fact that Mozart did not date all the concertos.

Today it is assumed that the alleged third concerto (K. 447) must have been composed after the fourth (K. 495). Why Mozart did not enter this in his thematic catalogue remains unclear. The alleged first concerto (K. 412) is thought to have been composed not as the first but as the last of the four concertos. The late date of composition (1791) would also explain why this concerto, which consists solely of a first movement and an unfinished rondo, lacks a middle movement.
