Info for Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin

Violinist Boris Begelman plays the "Himalayas for violinists" (Georges Enescu) on a period instrument by Louis Moitessier from the 1790s. J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are considered by musicologists and many musicians as the pinnacle of musical achievement, arguably the composer’s most demanding and emotionally penetrating works. They undoubtedly have a kind of iconic status in the violin repertoire. Yet, little is known about the background of these fascinating works and the correlations between the music and Bach’s personal life. The composer’s autograph manuscript is dated in Köthen in 1720, and it is commonly considered as the year when the cycle was completed. In his booklet notes Boris Begelman, who has gone back to the original manuscript sources to offer us his version of a masterpiece of the violin repertoire, presents some personal and interesting thoughts about these musical gems.

Boris Begelman, violin

Boris Begelman
was born in Moscow in 1983 and began his studies on the violin at the early age of seven.

After music school and college he studied at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Mikhail Gotsdiner (violin) and Dmitry Sinkovsky (baroque violin), and later postgraduate studies with Alexei Lubimov from 2007 to 2010. Following his growing interest in Early Music, Boris obtained his diploma in baroque violin (magna cum laude) at the Conservatorio Bellini di Palermo with Enrico Onofri (violin) and Riccardo Minasi (chamber music) in January 2013.

Boris has appeared as concertmaster as well as soloist with some of the finest baroque orchestras today including “Il Complesso Barocco” (Italy), “Accademia Bizantina” (Italy), “Cappella Gabetta” (Switzerland), “Il Pomo d'oro” (Italy), “Cappella Mediterranea” (France), “Divino Sospiro” (Portugal) and the “Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra” (Israel). He has performed as soloist with orchestras under the baton of Giovanni Antonini, Ottavio Dantone, Enrico Onofri and other world-renowned conductors.

During the 2014-2015 season amongst other engagements, Boris will direct from the violin and play solos with "Accademia Bizantina", direct Max Cencic at Opera di Lausanne with "Il Pomo d'Oro orchestra", tour China as a part of the Eggner Trio and conduct Simone Kermes and Vivica Genaux with “Cappella Gabetta Orchestra” at the Forum Am Schlosspark, Ludwigsburg.

Boris plays on a violin by Louis Moitessier from the 1790s.
