Josh Groban, the 22-year-old heartthrob singer whose self-titled debut lit up the classical crossover charts for months on end, invites listeners to get Closer on his sophomore studio release (he has also issued a live album tied to a PBS special). Joining again with producer David Foster, Groban delivers another set of heartwarming Europop songs -- including some co-written by the young crooner himself -- that holds true to the endearing formula that drew in his large cadre of fans. Lush, atmospheric production underscores Groban's soulful singing -- and no doubt about it: this boy can sing -- and fans with a hunger for his rich, expressive baritone putting over touching ballads will not be disappointed. Yet the album mixes in other elements, too. World-music touches (such as a Spanish guitar on "My Confession") lace several of the numbers with exotic colors, while Joshua Bell's sweet-toned violin adds lovely spins and swirls to the sentimental "Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)," and the innovative duo Deep Forest help Groban break away from romantic ballads on the rhythm-driven "Never Let Go." Groban's voice has also developed new power and range, as shown by his solid vocal prowess on such numbers as "Per Te" and the gospel choir–backed "You Raise Me Up" (though labeling his singing "operatic" remains wishful thinking). And while the album is less a valiant departure than a satisfying follow-up to the promise of his debut, to Groban's many fans, that's no concession at all.

Listening to Groban, it is easy to understand why this MOR style suits him so well as his maturing voice is not grand enough to fully embrace operatic material yet remains too rich and technical for typical mainstream pop music. On Closer he works within his limitations and the result is a more consistent listen than the scattershot debut with his voice sounding comfortable performing these emotional European-inspired pop songs. The best tunes bookend the disc as the atmospheric opener, "Oceano," sets an ominous tone while the mysterious "Never Let Go" is a welcome collaboration with Deep Forest that allows Groban to successfully move away from the saccharine ballads and grow as a vocalist. However, there is still plenty of romance included for the PBS crowd as "When You Say You Love Me" painfully cries out like a rejected Celine Dion cut and the Celtic-infused bombast of Secret Garden's "You Raise Me Up" plays like the sequel to his debut's most famous song, "To Where You Are." In addition to his improved vocals, Groban contributes three co-writing efforts that include "Never Let Go," and shows that there is a future for him to evenly match his skills as a vocalist and a songwriter. Although the disc still focuses on bland rose petal confessions, its highlights point in the right direction and bring Groban Closer to creating an album that eliminates the sick sweetness while remaining a tasty, satisfying treat.“ (Aaron Latham, AMG)

20 Millionen verkaufte Alben weltweit und sein unwiderstehlicher Charme als Live-Act haben JOSH GROBAN in wenigen Jahren zu einem der begehrtesten Sänger der Popszene gemacht. Anfang 2002 erschien JOSH GROBANs erstes Album Josh Groban, das zunächst relativ unspektakulär in die US-Billboard-Charts einstieg und nach einigen TV-Live-Auftritten den größten Chartsprung in der amerikanischen Chartgeschichte hinlegte: Von Platz 121 auf Platz 8! Bereits ein Jahr später hatte Josh Groban in den USA Triple-Platin erlangt und seinen weltweiten Siegeszug mit zehn No.1-Platzierungen angetreten. In Deutschland bekam er die Goldene Europa als „Entdeckung des Jahres“. Bis heute gingen 5 Millionen Exemplare des Debüts über die Ladentische.

Das Nachfolgealbum Closer toppte diese Erfolge bei Weitem: Es katapultierte sich auf Platz 1 der Billboard-Charts, ging auch bei uns in die Top-20 und konnte bislang 10 Millionen Exemplare verkaufen. Es erreichte vielfach internationale Gold- und Platinauszeichnungen und wurde 2004 für einen Grammy in der Kategorie „Best Male Pop Vocal Performance“ nominiert. Ebenfalls 2004 stand GROBAN auf Quincy Jones’ Veranstaltung We Are The Future an der Seite von Muhammad Ali, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Angelina Jolie, Lionel Richie und LL Cool J auf der Bühne des Circus Maximus in Rom 2005 brach GROBAN einen weiteren Rekord mit Live At The Greek: Die CD/DVD, die in Ausschnitten auch im deutschen Fernsehen gezeigt wurde, war in den USA die meistverkaufte DVD des Jahres 2005.

Das dritte Album Awake erschien im Herbst 2006, schnellte auf Position 2 der US-Charts und erreichte erneut mehrfaches Gold und Platin in vielen Ländern der Erde. Awake zeigt JOSH GROBAN unter anderem an der Seite von Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Herbie Hancock und Dave Matthews. Als Produzenten glänzen zudem David Foster, Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette) und Marius DeVries (Madonna, David Gray). Zum ersten Mal befinden sich auch eine Reihe von GROBANs Eigenkompositionen auf dem Album, das bei uns in die Top-30 geht.

Der Erfolg JOSH GROBANs in Deutschland beruht natürlich auf seinen außerordentlichen musikalischen Leistungen, aber auch als unterhaltsamer Entertainer erregt der heute 27-Jährige Aufsehen. Herzerfrischende Auftritte bei Verstehen Sie Spaß, bei 3 nach 9 und bei der Verleihung des Bayrischen Filmpreises 2007 sowie in Gastrollen in der kultigen US-Serie Ally McBeal zeigten ihn als humorvollen und unterhaltsamen jungen Mann. Während seiner 2004er Tour setzte er sein Publikum zudem mit seiner Vielseitigkeit in Erstaunen. Im Hamburger CCH gab GROBAN vor etwa 2000 anwesenden Zuschauern nicht nur am Mikrophon sein Bestes, sondern präsentierte auch herrliche Show-Einlagen an Drums, Keyboard und Piano! Stehende Ovationen waren dem gerührten Kalifornier gewiss.

Nach seinem triumphalen Erfolg mit Noël ist JOSH GROBAN nun wieder im Studio und arbeitet an einem neuen Album, dessen Erscheinen man im Laufe dieses Jahres erwarten kann.
