Info for Between the Heart and Reason
For years, this Belgium-based trio has been successfully touring Europe, Canada and the USA. With their “Between the Heart and Reason,” the Louvat Bros. have now enriched the acoustic world music scene with fifteen captivating own compositions that are rooted in bluegrass, Irish folk, Balkan, jazz and klezmer music. And they do so with the kind of top-notch technical precision and feather-lightness that will give the listener enjoyment from first to last note.
The trio is composed of Steve Louvat, rendering a pearly and icy clean banjo, Michel Vrydag, with a dancing and grooving bass, and the wild and propulsive mandolin and guitar in the hands of Jeff Cardey, a Canadian living in Brussels, who also supplies occasional vocals. Three “brothers” in spirit provide a new context for classic bluegrass instrumentation and demonstrate in an impressive manner that traditional music styles can be maintained, while at the same being developed for surprising effect.
Steve Louvat, 5-string banjo
Jeff Cardey, mandolin, guitar, vocal
Michel Vrydag, bass
Steve and Jefferson Louvat
are both left-handed and hail from the Liège area, Belgium. As kids, they discover a real passion for the 5string banjo, the guitar and the mandolin. They performed numerous concerts across Belgium as well as Europe (France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Irland, England, Tchèque Republic, Hungary…) but they also played several times over the United States at renowned festivals and music conventions. Today they are known as the Belgian ambassadors for the Bluegrass music which comes straight from the State of Kentucky.
Michel Vrydag
is a virtuoso bass player with a wide range of musical influences. Having a solid Jazz background, he is also a fine composer.
Needless to say the combination created in between those two different musical worlds gave birth to a fresh and sparkling kind of music. This trio presents a personal and contemporary approach of the Bluegrass and its associated instruments, including traditional materials but also originals.
