Biography Tim Collins & Martin Gasselsberger

Tim Collins
has been called a “world-class vibes player” (CJSR Canada), “a distinctive vibraphone voice” (Radio One Australia), a “musician of fire” (Washington Post) and “nothing less than exemplary” (Downbeat). His music has been described as “thoughtful, probing composition” (Downbeat), “universal and vibrant” (Blogcritics.org) and “stunning sophisticated jazz” (PBS Australia).

Tim currently teaches at the Neue Jazzschool München-Pasing and the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (Vienna).

His fifth album “For Good People” was released in February 2023 by GLM Music, and features Matthias Bublath on Hammond Organ and Christian Lettner on drums.

In 2020, he recorded his fourth album “Uncertainty” before the pandemic raged through the world. A vibraphone trio supported by bassist Masaki Kai and drummer Shinya Fukumori, the album takes a dark journey through different melancholic moods, featuring original compositions as well as several jazz standards.

Tim’s three previous albums as a leader have received widespread critical acclaim. His debut, VALCOUR (Arabesque 2007) featured Ingrid Jensen and Aaron Parks, and received 3 stars in Downbeat. In 2008, Tim released FADE (Ropeadope), featuring Charlie Hunter, Simon Lott, and a string quartet. Produced by Hunter, the album explores minimalist, indie-rock, and classical connections with jazz. It received 4 stars in Downbeat. Tim’s third album, CASTLES AND HILLTOPS (Nineteen-Eight 2011), features Danny Grissett, Matt Clohesy, and Tommy Crane.

He has toured, performed and recorded with John Ellis, John Hollenbeck, Ralph Alessi, Marty Ehrlich, Jody Redhage, Nasheet Waits, Hector Martignon, George Porter Jr., Ben Monder, Donny McCaslin, Joel Frahm, Ingrid Jensen, Aaron Parks, Antonio Sanchez, Aaron Goldberg, Will Vinson, Danny Grissett, Mike Moreno and Charlie Hunter.

Tim is a native of Plattsburgh, NY and has lived in Munich, Germany since 2010.

Martin Gasselsberger
was born on February 6, 1980, in Gaspoltshofen, Upper Austria.

He began classical piano lessons at the age of 5, and at 15, he began his career as a jazz pianist.

In 1999, he enrolled in the "IGP Keyboard Instruments Popular Music" program with Herbert Pichler at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, graduating with a Master's degree with distinction in 2007.

His active artistic activity as a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader has led to encounters with Wolfgang Puschnig, Jarek Smietana, Maria Joao, Klaus Dickbauer, Tony Momrelle, Doug McLeod, L.A. Jones, Memo Gonzales, Rob Rio, Lynn Drury, Roberto Luti, Vince Weber, Hans Theesink, Bumi Fian, Lorenz Raab, LungauBigband, Thomas Gansch, Katharina Stemberger, Frank Hoffmann, Maxi Blaha, Oliver Mally, Ernst Grissemann, Christoph Grissemann, and many others.

Martin Gasselsberger has recorded over 50 CDs; 6 CDs and one DVD are available from his trio "mg3" (Martin Gasselsberger Trio) alone, with his long-time collaborators Roland Kramer and Gerald Endstrasser.

Many of these recordings have been broadcast in Canada, Japan, Australia, and most European countries.

Martin Gasselsberger, along with Petra Linecker, received the "artist in residence" scholarship from the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce in 2008 and was named Austria's Jazz Musician of the Year by the music magazine "Concerto" in 2009 and 2010. These awards are primarily due to the artistic work of his trio "mg3," which has also collaborated with Frank Hoffmann since 2008.

2012 brought his first musical encounter with Tim Collins, an exceptional vibraphonist from New York. This led to many concerts as a quartet, and in 2016, the live CD "Out & Across" was recorded.

Since 2016, alongside many other projects (Frank Hoffmann, mg3, "Sir" Oliver Mally, Petra Linecker, etc.), Klaus Dickbauer has enjoyed a very intensive collaboration, both artistically and pedagogically, with saxophonist Klaus Dickbauer. In 2017, Klaus Dickbauer and Martin Gasselsberger developed the music playalong app "CHORDMILL" (for iOS and Android), and in 2018, the recording "Duck Talk" by the trio "Triple Ay" (Dickbauer/Gasselsberger/Rainer) was released.

In 2019, the CD "DOMINO" by the trio "TripleStockPot" (Martin Gasselsberger (piano), Christian Wendt (bass), and Christian Lettner) was released. The album "Warm Embrace" in duo with Petra Linecker, and the Christmas album "Schöne Bescherung" in duo with Frank Hoffmann were released.
