Die Band vereinigt fünf Musiker aus Deutschland, Schweden und Dänemark, die sich in Berlin am renommierten Jazz Institute Berlin kennenlernten. Die Musik des Quintetts besteht aus farbenfrohen Harmonien und kantigen Melodien, die eine Ästhetik von Fusion und Hip-Hop sowie samplebasierter Produktionstechniken mit eklektischen Rhythmen und komplexen Strukturen, inspiriert von der jungen Berliner Jazz-Szene verbinden. Dabei sind Beats und Hip Hop für die Musiker genauso wichtig für den Sound der Band, wie die Europäische klassische Tradition, Brasilianische Musik aus den 70ern oder die Jazz-Geschichte.Die einzelnen Mitglieder der Band gehören bereits zu den gefragtesten jungen Musikern der Jazz-Szene in Deutschland und Europa und in SUN ARK kommen sie zusammen um gemeinsam zu experimentieren und zu improvisieren und einen neuen und aktuellen Sound zu entwickeln.

SUN ARK
Vibey, soulful and genre-bending, Sun Ark weaves together electronic, hip-hop, Brazilian and jazz influences to create a lush, colourful and orchestral sound. Dreamy and complex, Sun Ark founder and songwriter Johannes Mann describes their self-titled debut album (Berlin’s XJAZZ Music, February 2024) as ‘exploring a landscape’; a sonic story with a sunny, springy opening track that bends into a red-hot, experimental arc. In Sun Ark’s live performances, the band’s beat-driven grooves drift from produced compositions penned by Mann into skillful ambient and collaborative improvisations, creating a sound that is effervescent and entirely unique.

SUN ARK features a constellation of international players at the cutting edge of Berlin’s jazz scene: Mann (guitarist and composer), Asger Nissen (alto saxophone), Povel Widestrand (piano, fender rhodes and synthesizers), Thorbjörn Stefansson (double bass), Marius Wankel (drums) and Bene Jäckle on flute. Mann, Nissen, Widestrand, Stefansson, Wankel and Jäckle have played in venues around the world, from Bahia, Brazil’s Festival de Jazz do Capão to Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center and across a number of local venues, including the Jazzexzess Concert Series, Jazzclub A-Trane and Donau115. In SUN ARK they join forces to improvise and experiment collectively to create a current Sound that aims to have a profound spiritual and emotional Impact.
