Aufgenommen live in Birmingham während einer Tournee des Contemporary Music Network im Jahr 2002, zeigt Tramonto den britischen Pianisten John Taylor (1942–2015) in festlicher, ausgelassener Stimmung mit einer seiner dynamischsten und schlagfertigsten Gruppen, bestehend aus den US-Musikern Marc Johnson und Joey Baron – jenem energiegeladenen Team, das später an der von der Kritik gefeierten ECM-Aufnahme Rosslyn mitwirkte.
Das Repertoire umfasst die bekannten Taylor-Stücke „Pure and Simple“, „Between Moons“ und „Ambleside“ (in einer epischen 15-minütigen Version) sowie den von Ralph Towner komponierten Titeltrack und Steve Swallows „Up Too Late“, das von Bop-Phrasierungen zu freiem Spiel übergeht und ein mit dem Bogen gespieltes Solo von Johnson sowie flirrende Drums von Baron enthält.
Insgesamt eine willkommene Erinnerung daran, welch kreative Kraft John Taylor als Leader eines herausragenden Klaviertrios sein konnte.

“…one of contemporary jazz’s great performers…” so reads the prestigious Guardian newspaper’s assessment of English pianist John Taylor. As house pianist at London’s legendary Ronny Scott’s jazz club, Taylor accompanied many of the icons of jazz, and in so doing honed his individual style into what became one of the most important voices on the European jazz scene. The gigs and recordings of his own groups, his long-time association with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, his many ECM trio recordings with Peter Erskine and Palle Danielsonn and groups lead by the likes of Jan Garbarek and John Surman established Taylor’s importance.
