Info for Plays Mozart

“Divertimenti” were a popular and much loved musical form in the 18th century. Mozart composed a lot of Divertimenti. Although the Divertimenti KV 136/137/138 were originally composed as the ”Salzburger Symfonies”. Due to the Italian influences and emotional depth in the slow movements people thought more of these four-voiced works than just simple “Divertementi”.

The Gaudi Quartet has been an advocate of these divertimenti and early quartets of Mozart for many years. Maybe because we know what Mozart composed later on in his career we tend to say that these early works are “precursors of…….”. That is a shame! I personally share this sentiment with the Gaudi Quartet. On this album you can hear the amazingly rich quartet music Mozart gave us in his teenage years. (Jan Willem de Vriend)

The Gaudi Quartet
was founded in 1999 by four young, enthusiastic and experienced professional musicians. Inspired to explore the world of quartetmusic they started studying under the guidance of the Daniel stringquartet at the Rotterdam conservatory. Here they laid the foundation of the quartet. After almost 15 years they are still playing together with more joy then ever.

In the following years they took masterclasses with members of the Daniel Quartet, Cleveland string Quartet and the Panocha Quartet. The quartet have done innumerable concerts and other engagements both at home and abroad and are a very adaptable ensemble.

As they have been playing together for a long period of time they have built up a broad repertoire starting in 1999 with the J.Haydn Kaiserquartet they have expanded their repertoire from early stringquartets to contemporary music. Although their focus is with classical music they have also played a lot of pop and jazz music.

The name of the quartet is based on the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi who is best known for his colorful ,straight from the heart, distinctive style. This is also how the Gaudi Quartet plays, with their heart open creating color and atmosphere.

The Gaudi Quartet has given concerts all over Europe. In recent years they gave concerts in Ireland, Germany, Austria, The Czech Republic, and last year they performed in various concert halls in Portugal. For the nearby future concerts are being planned in Germany,Portugal and Switzerland.

In January 2013 they recorded their first cd with works of W.A. Mozart. "Mozart brings out the best in us, we love to play his music. Therefore it was a logical choice for us to record some of his works".

What makes the quartet stand out is the fact that they are open to play many different musical styles from baroque to light music.

The Gaudi Quartet can provide made-to measure performances and is very flexible. "Everywhere we play we try to have fun and we always play from the heart, come and experience it!"
