Anlässlich des 120. Geburtstages von Rudolf Serkin veröffentlicht die Deutsche Grammophon erstmals Serkins letzte Beethoven-Aufnahmen: Die beiden Klaviersonaten "Waldstein" und "Appassionata", die 1986 und 1989 entstanden. Aufgrund Serkins fortgeschrittener Krankheit, konnte er die Tonbänder nicht mehr endgültig freigeben. Serkins Tochter Judith Serkin hat nun der Veröffentlichung dieser Aufnahmen des großen Beethoven-Interpreten Serkin zugestimmt und auch einen persönlichen Text für das Booklet beigesteuert. Zu erleben ist eine altersweise, zarte und sehr humane Sicht auf Beethoven. Neben zahlreichen Fotos sind in dem Booklet außerdem ein Abdruck des Aufnahmeprotokolls und eines Briefes an die Aufnahmeleiterin zu finden.
Dies Album ist die erste Veröffentlichung der neuen "The Lost Tapes"-Serie, in der bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus den Archiven der Deutschen Grammophon ans Licht gebracht werden.

Rudolf Serkin
(1903-1991) was a Bohemian-born pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Beethoven interpreters of the 20th century.
Serkin made his first United States appearance at the Coolidge Festival in Washington, D.C. in 1934. In 1936, he launched his solo concert career in the USA with the New York Philharmonic. The critics raved, describing him as "an artist of unusual and impressive talents in possession of a crystalline technique, plenty of power, delicacy, and tonal purity." In 1937, Serkin played his first New York City recital at Carnegie Hall.
