Info for Christmas Songbook

The King’s Singers follow their recent Great American Songbook album with the Christmas equivalent, on a disc that pays homage to the group’s roots whilst acknowledging their current passion for swing.

Traditional favourites such as “The First Nowell,” “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and the beautiful Austrian carol “Still, Still, Still,” jockey for position amongst modern-day classics like “Winter Wonderland,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Sleigh Ride.” All are presented in new arrangements by some of the group’s favourite arrangers: Robert Rice, Keith Roberts and Alexander L’Estrange.

„If you like the style of the King's Singers, with their delicate male extended jazz harmonies and their vocal dooby-doo-wahs and ching-ching-ching-ching-chings, you'll surely agree that the Christmas song, with its simple, familiar, and infinitely malleable materials, fits their work well. With the release of Christmas Songbook in 2016, they have issued three Christmas albums, plus one with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. As the Christmas Songbook title suggests, this one is a bit more oriented toward American popular repertoire than the earlier ones, although there are still several traditional carols. These are placed as slow interludes, letting the vocal flights and jazzy elaborations settle down for a minute to luscious straight harmonies. For the full effect, though, sample one of the more ornate arrangements, like Winter Wonderland, which, like several other pieces on the album, is arranged by the composer Alexander L'Estrange. After nearly 50 years and countless changes in membership, the sound of the King's Singers has not only remained constant but has continued to develop, and that's why they still flourish while so many other ensembles have fallen by the wayside. An early recommendation for Christmas 2016 and beyond.“ (James Manheim, AMG)

“It mixes snappy arrangements of American secular favourites like Santa Claus is coming to town…the six-part harmonies are typically immaculate…King’s Singers diehards won’t hesitate” (BBC Music Magazine, AMG)
