„The Spirit“ ist das zwölfte Studioalbum und markiert Race's Rückker zu seinen Wurzeln im Psychedelic Rock, der einst vom Melody Maker passend als ‘Industrial Trance Blues’ bezeichnet wurde.

Das neue Album „Taoist Priests“ von Hugo Race, dem rastlosen Wanderer zwischen den Welten, wurde gerade erst in Melbourne aufgenommen. Mit dem Downunder-True-Spirit-Kollektiv setzt Race weniger auf bloße Sounds, denn auf Songs bauend. Auf dieser Platte finden sich alle Stimmungen und Klangfarben seiner letzten sechs Alben wieder. Die Songs lassen dabei vor allem den Songwriter Hugo Race erkennen, der den Hörer mitnimmt auf seine Reisen in die Tiefen von Psyche und Geist. Hugos Stärke liegt dabei in seinem rauen, reduzierten, unverkennbaren Gesang, vor allem aber in den Texten, die von den Ängsten und Dämonen, aber auch den Abgründen unserer unmittelbaren Gegenwart erzählen. Hugo selbst behauptet, dass es das beste Album werde, dass er jemals aufgenommen habe. Und das sagt er – im Unterschied zu vielen Künstlern - sonst nie. Echt nicht.

Produziert wurde das Album über einen Zeitraum von 3 Jahren von Hugo Race selbst in seiner Heimatstadt Melbourne. Aufgenommen im selben Line-Up (Michelangelo Russo - Electronics, Bryan Colechin - Bass, Brett Poliness - Drums und Percussion, Nico Mansy - Keys) wie die Alben, Goldstreet Sessions (2003), Taoist Priests (2006) und 53rd State (2008), besticht The Spirit durch seinen energetischen rhythmischen Drive, hypnotischen Groove und Race's dunklen Humor.

The True Spirit
is a loose, freewheeling fraternity of like-minded free spirits with a shared love of psychedelic rock and roots music. Their irreverent experimentalism has fleshed out Hugo Race's music onstage in and in studio for over twenty years. Originally from Melbourne, in early 1989 Hugo moved base to Berlin, and Normal Records (Germany) released his first True Spirit album “Rue Morgue Blues” as the Wall fell. So began two decades based in Europe and the production of 14 Hugo Race & True Spirit albums, the latest of which “53rd State” was released in Australia (Spooky Records) and Europe (Glitterhouse Records) in 2008 to rave reviews.

“Urban dreamscapes… elegant trip-hop… ambient noise psychedelia… raw cosmic blues… live garage rock… cinematic melancholia, new wave nostalgia, essential songwriting, post-rock minimalism…” – all these descriptions have been applied to Hugo’s work, best summarised as:
