Während der Fly-Bassist Larry Grenadier bei ECM mit dem reinen Soloalbum "The Gleaners" debütiert, hat Pianist Giovanni Guidi sein Trio für "Avec Le Temps" zum Quintett erweitert.

Mit "The Gleaners" ("Die Sammler") hat Larry Grenadier ein tiefgründiges und höchst kreatives Album geschaffen, für das er Einflüsse aus einer Vielzahl von Quellen sammelte. Zum Titel selbst inspirierte den Bassisten Agnès Vardas Dokumentarfilm "The Gleaners And I". Unter seine eigenen Stücke - darunter eines, dass er seinem frühen Helden Oscar Pettiford gewidmet hat - mischte Grenadier auch Kompositionen von George Gershwin, John Coltrane, Paul Motian, Rebecca Martin und Wolfgang Muthspiel. "Bevor ich mit diesen Aufnahmen begann, richtete ich meinen Blick erst einmal nach innen", schreibt der Bassist in seinen Linernotes, "und legte die Kernelemente frei, die mich als Bassisten definieren. Dabei suchte ich nach zentralen Klängen und Klangfarben, nach verbindenden Harmonien und Rhythmen, die eine musikalische Identität in ihrem Kern ausmachen." Das Album, das im Dezember 2016 in den New Yorker Avatar Studios aufgenommen und von Manfred Eicher produziert wurde, ist eine wichtige Ergänzung der ECM-Serie mit hochkarätigen Bass-Soloalben. "The Gleaners" erscheint am 15. Februar. Den Track "Oceanic" kann man aber schon jetzt auf allen Streaming-Plattformen hören.

Seit rund sieben Jahren unterhält Giovanni Guidi nun schon sein Trio mit dem US-amerikanischen Bassisten Thomas Morgan und dem portugiesischen Schlagzeuger João Lobo. Ihr fabelhaftes Zusammenspiel haben sie bereits auf den beiden von der Kritik hochgelobten ECM-Alben "City Of Broken Dreams" (2013) und "This Is The Day" (2015) gezeigt. Auch auf Guidis neuem Album "Avec Le Temps", dass am 15. Februar bei ECM erscheint, sind Morgan und Lobo wieder verlässliche Partner des italienischen Pianisten. Gemeinsam spielten sie für das Album eine zutiefst bewegende Interpretation des Titelstücks (ein von Léo Ferré geschriebenes Lied über Liebe und Verlust) und die Tomasz Stanko gewidmete Schlussnummer "Tomasz" ein. Zwischendurch aber schwillt die Band - erweitert durch den Saxophonisten Francesco Bearzatti und den Gitarristen Roberto Cecchetto - auf Quintett-Größe an. Das Programm, das bis auf das Stück von Ferré ausschließlich aus Originalen von Guidi besteht, ist deutlich kontrastierenden Energien und Farben geprägt, zu dem alle Musiker in Solo- und Gruppenimprovisationen ihren Teil beitragen.

Avec le temps wurde aufgenommen in den Studios La Buissonne im November 2017 und von Manfred Eicher produziert.

Giovanni Guidi
Born in Foligno 1985, meets Enrico Rava during a Workshop in Siena. Rava notices his talent and decides to include him in “Rava Under 21” project, that would become “Rava New Generation” after a little time. With this group Guidi will record two CDs , in 2006 and in 2010, for “ESPRESSO” magazine.

At the moment, beyond the partnership with Gianluca Petrella, his own personal trio with Luca Aquino and Michele Rabbia, his quartet leaded with the young sax “enfant prodige” Mattia Cigalini, Guidi is always leader of his own groups.

He took part to a very large number of important jazz festivals all around the world. We may mension Umbria Jazz, Vicenz New Conversation, Zurich Nu Jazz, Umbria Jazz Balcanic Windows, Stavanger Mai Jazz, Jazzlandia, Noth Sea Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Molde Jazz, Portland Jazz Festival, and many others. Moreover , he performed in many clubs and theatres in New york, San Paolo, Rio De Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Brasilia, Slavador De Bahia, Berlino, Parigi, Londra, Monaco, Dublino, Seoul, Hong Kong.

His first album as a leader is “Tomorrow Never Knows”, recorded by the japanese label VENUS, receiving five stars in a review by the “Swing Journal” magazine.

After that he released other four albums for CAM JAZZ label: “Indian Summer” and “ The House Behind This One” recorded with his quartet, “The Unknown Rebel” with a band of ten elements and “We Don’t Live Here Anymore” recorded in New York with Gianluca Petrella, Michael Blake, Thomas Morgan and Gerald Clever.

His first album as leader released by the prestigious ECM label is dated 2013: “City of Broken Dreams”, recorded in trio with Thomas Morgan and Joao Lobo.

Guidi had just recorded previously two other albums for ECM: “Tribe” and “ On The Dance Floor”, both by Enrico Rava.

Guidi won, moreover, several awards, such as the “TOPJAZZ “ award by “Musica Jazz” magazine. In that occasion the young pianist is been named by a 58 members jury the best talent of 2007. On March 2015 ECM released “This Is The Day” recorded with Thomas Morgan and Joao Lobo.
