Virko Baley wurde 1938 in der Ukraine geboren und kam 1949 als Flüchtling in die USA, wo er sich schließlich in Las Vegas niederließ. Seit langem ist er von der Poesie Emily Dickinsons fasziniert, wie man in den beiden hier eingespielten bewegenden Werken hören kann - einem Orchester-Liederzyklus mit Vertonungen ihrer Texte und einer Suite für Violine und Klavier, die von diesen Vertonungen inspiriert ist. Sie zeigen ein feines Gespür für orchestrale Farben, eine Vorliebe für dramatische Gesten und einen ausgeprägten Sinn für Lyrik, der gelegentlich von entfernten Anklängen an Baleys osteuropäische Herkunft geprägt ist. Der Reichtum des Liederzyklus stellt ihn in die Nähe von Mahler und Berg, während die Zurückhaltung der Songs without Words gelegentlich an Arvo Pärt erinnert.
