Nach seinem Debütalbum Belle Époque widmet sich das Orsino Ensemble nun der böhmischen Musik. Die tschechische Bläsermusik hat eine lange Tradition und verfügt über ein reichhaltiges Repertoire, aus dem sie schöpfen kann. Antoine Reicha war ein Zeitgenosse (und Freund) von Beethoven. Sein Es-Quintett, das 1817 veröffentlicht wurde, zeigt seinen harmonischen Einfallsreichtum und sein Talent für idiomatische Instrumentalmusik. Mládí, von Janácek als "...eine Art Jugenderinnerung" beschrieben, wurde 1924 zur Feier des siebzigsten Geburtstags des Komponisten komponiert, und die Stimmung des Stücks ist durchweg optimistisch. Der in Brünn geborene Pavel Haas studierte am dortigen Konservatorium bei Janácek - tatsächlich gilt Haas weithin als der größte Schüler Janáceks. Das 1929 komponierte Bläserquintett ist typisch für seine eigenwillige musikalische Fantasie und seine Vorliebe für instrumentale Klangfarben. Bohuslav Martinu stammte aus der kleinen Stadt Policka an der tschechisch-mährischen Grenze, erhielt aber seine frühe musikalische Ausbildung in Prag, wo er auch zweite Geige in der Tschechischen Philharmonie spielte. Ein staatliches Stipendium ermöglichte es ihm, Anfang der 1920er Jahre nach Paris zu gehen, um bei Roussel zu studieren. Martinu tauchte in das Pariser Musikleben ein, wobei die Werke Strawinskys und die Jazz-Szene seine eigenen Kompositionen stark beeinflussten. Sein Sextett für Bläser und Klavier gilt als eines seiner erfolgreichsten vom Jazz inspirierten Stücke und zeigt, obwohl es ein Frühwerk ist, den natürlichen melodischen Stil, der für seine späteren Werke so typisch ist.

Making their debut at the Aldeburgh International Festival in 2018, The Orsino Ensemble is a flexible format chamber ensemble with a central focus on the five outstanding wind players at its core. Each a leader in their field, the group’s members are committed to showcasing the depth and versatility of the wind chamber repertoire; expanding and reducing the ensemble’s format as needed across their different programmes.

The ensemble was founded in 2018 with inaugural performances at the Aldeburgh Festival. Other recent highlights have included appearances at the West Cork Chamber Music, Chipping Campden and Ryedale Festivals. The ensemble has collaborated with artists including Pavel Kolesnikov, James Baillieu and Katya Apekisheva.

Highlights of the 22/23 season include performances at Wigmore Hall, LSO St Luke’s and the Two Moors Festival, as well as a weekend residency at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Upcoming collaborations include performances with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, a project they will take to Wigmore Hall and Sibelius Hall in Helsinki.

The Orsino Ensemble’s first recording, featuring French repertoire for Winds and Piano, was released for Chandos in 2021 to critical acclaim across the board with The Guardian praising the recording as “a disc that beguiles and dazzles in every bar”. Future recording plans for Chandos include a Czech-focussed disc featuring repertoire by Janacek, Martinu, Haas and Reicha.
