Dmitrij Schostakowitschs Symphonie Nr. 7 (Leningrader Symphonie) wurde in Proben für die Konzerte vom 9.–12. Februar 2016 einstudiert. Jansons hält die Zügel straff in der Hand. Er spricht über den Geist von Schostakowitschs Musik, den er sehr genau verstanden hatte und mit dem er aufs engste vertraut war, von der Wirkung der Leningrader Symphonie und ihres Missbrauchs durch die sowjetische Propaganda.

In Proben am 24. Januar 2017 für Münchner Konzerte erarbeitete Jansons mit dem BRSO Sergei Rachmaninows Symphonische Tänze. Jansons gelingt es, die opulente Klangpalette Rachmaninows zum Leuchten zu bringen. Das letzte große Werk des russischen Komponisten, alles andere als Tanzmusik, sondern eher eine Vorahnung seines nahen Todes, schätzte er selbst auch als sein bestes ein.
