Die 1788 komponierten Quartette von Opus 54, die als Werke der vollen kompositorischen Reife Haydns gelten, lassen uns in das reichhaltige Universum des "Vaters des Streichquartetts" eintauchen. Wie beim Adagio von Op. 54 Nr. 2 erfüllen uns seine Menschlichkeit und sein Tiefgang mit Staunen und erinnern uns daran, wie sehr das Wesen des Streichquartetts in dieser Musik zur Geltung kommt. Das Jahr 2020 markiert für das Psophos-Quartett eine Erneuerung mit dem Eintritt von Mathilde Borsarello Herrmann und dem Entstehen verschiedener Projekte, die von dem gemeinsamen Wunsch getragen werden, Musik zu teilen, weiterzugeben und mit Leib und Seele zu erfüllen. Gegründet 1997 am Nationalen Konservatorium für Musik in Lyon, vervollkommnete das Quartett sein Können mit dem Ysaÿe Quartett und vertiefte seine Kenntnisse unter der Leitung von Walter Levin in Basel. Die Neugierde führt das Psophos Quartett zu neuen Künstlern, Schauspielern und Regisseuren. Seit drei Jahren ist das Psophos Quartett im Athénée-Théâtre Louis Jouvet in Paris zu Gast, wo es eine eigene Reihe von Kammermusikkonzerten veranstaltet.

Joseph Haydns Streichquartettschaffen, so umfangreich es auf den ersten Blick auch erscheinen mag, ist heute doch leicht überschaubar dank der Gliederung in gedruckte Werkserien, deren Opuszahlen gewissermaßen zur zweiten Identität für die Quartette geworden sind. Zu Haydns Zeit kümmerten sich die Verleger in Paris oder Offenbach gewöhnlich nicht um die Opusnummern, unter denen die selben Quartette in Wien oder Paris erschienen waren. Deshalb gibt es etwa für die Quartette op. 54 in den Originaldrucken di e unterschiedlichsten Opuszahlen, und erst in den Nachdrucken des 19. Jahrhunderts setzte sich eine Art internationaler Kanon mit der heute bekannten Zählung durch. Letztere ist auch deshalb von Nutzen, weil sich an ihr die stilistische Entwicklung der Quartette Haydns in klare Stationen unterteilen läßt. So ist etwa Opus 20 der große experimentelle Zyklus vor der Entdeckung des “klassischen Stils”, den Haydn in Opus 33 etablierte. Opus 50 zeigt die stärkste monothematische Arbeit, Opus 64 den Einfluß Mozarts, op. 71 eine zunehmende Tendenz zum Sinfonischen usw.

Opus 54 nimmt in dieser Entwicklung eine Außenseiterrolle ein. Zum einen besteht der Zyklus nur aus drei, nicht aus sechs Quartetten, zum anderen sind die Formen der drei Quartette so ungewöhnlich, daß man sie als Experimente verstehen muß. Das Quartett C-dur, op. 54, 2, beginnt mit einemVivace in der üblichen Sonatenform, jedoch mit einem völlig neuen Verständnis von deren harmonischen Möglichkeiten. Das erste Thema, das die Grundtonart eigentlich breit ausführen sollte, wird sogleich nach G, As und a versetzt , von Generalpausen wirkungsvoll unterbrochen. Diese harmonischen Überraschungen reißen im Verlauf des Satzes nicht ab. Langsamer Satz und Menuett bilden in dem Quartett eine Einheit: das c-Moll-Adagio endet auf einem Halbschluß, an den sich attaca das Menuett – wiederum mit c-Moll- Trio – anschließt. Am seltsamsten ist das Finale gebaut. Es beginnt mit einer langsamen Einleitung, die es gewissermaßen versäumt, dem Rondo Platz zu machen: sie wird breit ausgesponnen, bevor endlich scheinbar doch das Rondo-Presto einsetzt; am Ende kehrt freilich das Adagio wieder. Das Quartett entstand im Auftrag des Wiener Geigers und “Großhandlungsgremialisten” Johann Tost, der auch Haydns op. 55 und 64 sowie die beiden letzten Streichquintette Mozarts in Auftrag gab. Wie in all diesen Werken wird auch hier die erste Geige virtuos hervorgehoben: mit Trillerfiguren, Laufwerk und – im Adagio – im Stil alla zingarese.

2020 marks a renewal for the Psophos Quartet with the arrival of Mathilde Borsarello Herrmann and the emergence of various projects driven by a common desire to share, transmit and give body and soul to music. Founded in 1997 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, the quartet then went on to perfect its skills with the Ysaÿe Quartet and, under the aegis of Walter Levin in Basel, enriched its knowledge. Master classes with the great quartets Amadeus, Berg, LaSalle, Hagen, within the Proquartet will forge the Psophos' passionate commitment.

The Quartet has subsequently won numerous international prizes, from Osaka, Florence and London to the 1st Grand Prize of the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2001. It was also the first French quartet to be selected by the BBC's prestigious New Generation Artist in London and was nominated in 2005 for the Victoires de la musique. They were then invited to perform in prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The "Folles journées" (Nantes, Tokyo, Lisbon, Warsaw), the "Prom's" and many other festivals mark out his career and give him the opportunity to play with great musicians such as Bertrand Chamayou, Juliana Steinbach, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Nemanja Radulovic...

Curiosity leads the Psophos Quartet to new artists, actors and directors. For three years, the Psophos Quartet is in residence at the Athénée Théâtre Louis Jouvet in Paris where it produces its own series of chamber music concerts. They performed at the Théâtre National de Chaillot and the Opéra de Lyon, notably with the choreographer and dancer Philippe Decouflé. In collaboration with Christophe Malavoy, he created the show "Qui se souviendra" which toured for a year in Paris and in France. The quartet has recorded numerous albums, all of which have received critical acclaim.

A beautiful encounter with Jean-Marie Machado and Dave Liebman led them to jazz with "Painting notes in the air", which they recorded on the album Media Luz. Recent recordings include the first quartets of Brahms and Dohnanyi, as well as the disc "Chansons perpétuelles", the result of a magnificent collaboration with the Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux. The variety of the Psophos Quartet's discography is indicative of the desire of its members to constantly feed off different musical worlds and to be at the crossroads of their desires. Their latest album "Constellations", a tribute to French composers, is a testimony of enchanting sounds: Ravel, Debussy, Dutilleux.

The Psophos Quartet attaches great importance to the influence that music can have if it is shared by all. After having supported the Rive association in the fight against AIDS by giving charity concerts in the Indian Ocean for years, the Psophos Quartet has also committed itself to the Paris Mozart Orchestra to play in suburban schools and prisons throughout the year.

In 2019 the Quartet has joined forces with the Artie's collective to travel to Cambodia to meet the children of the association "Pour un sourire d'enfant" and to introduce them to classical music...
