Nach der Ankündigung ihres Studioalbums Rally Cry&, das von Eric Ratz (Metric, Billy Talent) produziert, von Mark Needham (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac) gemischt und von Greg Calbi (Arcade Fire, Kacey Musgraves) gemastert wurde, gibt es zunächst mit Relentlessab sofort den ersten Vorboten aus dem neuen Longplayer. Bei Relentless begibt sich die Band auf ungewohnte Songwritingpfade, wie Frontmann Max Kerman erzählt: Mein Vater zeigte mir diesen südafrikanischen Künstler namens Chicco und diesen Song mit diesem afro-pop, keyboardgetriebenen, epischen, filmischen Groove. Wir waren so begeistert, dass wir zum ersten Mal einen Track gesampelt haben und gemeinsam daran gearbeitet haben, eine Melodie um ihn herum zu bauen. Rockbands sind nicht so bekannt, dass sie ihren Zeh in die Sample-Welt tauchen, aber 2018 sind wir dabei, alle konventionellen Regeln über den Haufen zu werfen. Lyrisch dachte ich an die Idee, ein Teil von etwas Größerem als mir selbst zu sein. Ich habe über die Band nachgedacht, und wie wir uns aufeinander stützen, und wie jeder Typ etwas anderes mitbringt, aber zu einer größeren Idee beiträgt. Wir finden Stärke ineinander.

"Rally Cry" dürfte ARKELLS nicht nur weitere Charterfolge bescheren, sondern stellt davon losgelöst eine achtbare künstlerische Leistung dar. Die Band destilliert die Essenz ihrer Musik, um sich stilistisch weiter ausstrecken zu können, und findet dabei paradoxerweise endgültig zu sich selbst.
