Info for Saint-Saëns: Complete Symphonies

In a release that marks the centenary of Camille Saint-Saëns’ death in December 1921, the Orchestre National de France, conducted by its music director Cristian Măcelaru, performs the composer’s five symphonies: Nos 1, 2 and 3 and two unnumbered works, the early Symphony in A major and the Symphony in F major, ‘Urbs Roma’. The works span some 35 years of the composer’s dazzling career – from around 1850, when he was 15, to 1886, the year that the Symphony No 3 was premiered. By far the best known of the five, No 3 famously complements the orchestra with an organ, played on this new recording by Olivier Latry.

Olivier Latry
The French organist Olivier Latry, who has established himself as the world's leading ambassador for his instrument, performs at the most prestigious venues in the world, is a guest of leading orchestras under renowned conductors, records for major labels and has an impressive number of world premieres.

Olivier Latry was appointed titular organist at the Notre-Dame in Paris at the age of 23 and has been emeritus organist at the Orchester National de Montréal since 2012. First and foremost, he is an accomplished, thoughtful and adventurous musician who explores all areas of organ music and has an exceptional talent for improvisation.

Olivier Latry performs regularly in concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Paris Philharmonic, the Disney Hall, the Davies Hall in San Francisco, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Wiener Musikverein and its Concert Hall, the Budapest Palace of Arts and the Royal Festival Hall.

As a soloist he has performed with leading conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Andris Nelsons, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Stephane Denève, Fabien Gabel, Christoph Eschenbach, Alain Altinoglu, Kent Nagano, Edo de Waart and Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

Due to his strong ties to the French organ repertoire, he recorded Olivier Messiaen's complete works for organ for Deutsche Grammophon, which he also performed in concerts in Paris, London and New York, as well as a César Franck album in 2005.

Another well-known recording is the Saint-Saëns Organ Concerto with Christoph Eschenbach and the Philadelphia Orchestra, which was released by Ondine. In 2016 he recorded for Warner Music on the magnificent Rieger organ of the Paris Philharmonic, which he inaugurated earlier this year. In March 2019 he started a collaboration with the La Dolce Volta label with the album "Bach to the Future". The project, recorded on the organ of Notre Dame de Paris, shows Bach's transcriptions and original works adapted to this extraordinary instrument.

Olivier Latry, a former student of Gaston Litaize, now teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and has received numerous international awards and prizes around the world, including the Prize for Cino and Simone Del Duca (Institut de France-Académie des Beaux) in 2000. In 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

From 2019 to 2022 he is William T. Kemper Artist-in-Residence at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
