Info for Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches (2026 Remastered Super Deluxe Edition)

The album, originally released by the Happy Mondays in 1990, captured the chaotic, euphoric spirit of the Madchester movement and blended indie rock, acid house rhythms and funk grooves into a sound that redefined British alternative music. With landmark tracks such as ‘Step On’ and ‘Kinky Afro’, the album became both a commercial breakthrough and a cultural snapshot of a generation shaped by the dance culture and nightlife of the North.

More than 35 years after it soundtracked sticky dancefloors, late-night drives and the peak of Madchester chaos, Happy Mondays’ Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches is getting the deluxe reissue treatment it arguably always deserved.

Originally released in November 1990, the album didn’t just help define the Madchester era - it helped break British indie music out of its traditional mould altogether. It was baggy, chaotic, funky and fuelled by rave culture, with Shaun Ryder delivering lyrics that felt half genius, half mischief. Tracks like Step On, Kinky Afro and Loose Fit became anthems of the era, while the album itself peaked at No.4 on the UK Albums Chart and became one of the defining British records of the early 1990s.

Now, London Records has announced the first major reissue campaign for the landmark album, with newly remastered audio taken from the original Factory Records master tapes. The full range lands on 21 August 2026, and for collectors, this one looks seriously tempting.

The album perfectly captured a very specific moment in British culture where indie kids, club culture and rave music collided. At one end you had guitars. At the other, Ibiza-inspired grooves, acid house rhythms and dancefloor energy. Somehow, Happy Mondays made it all work.

And visually? The legendary artwork from Central Station Design became just as iconic as the music itself, using collaged sweet wrappers and snack packaging to create one of the most recognisable album sleeves of its era.

Happy Mondays

Happy Mondays
are an English rock band formed in Salford, Greater Manchester, in 1980. Emerging during the post-punk era, they became one of the leading acts of the late 1980s and early 1990s Madchester scene, which fused alternative rock with acid house and dance music. The band was founded by frontman Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, guitarist Mark Day, drummer Gary Whelan, and keyboardist Paul Davis. Dancer and percussionist Mark "Bez" Berry later became an iconic part of the group with his wild stage presence.

Their breakthrough came with the 1988 album "Bummed," produced by Martin Hannett, but it was their 1990 release, "Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches," that solidified their status, featuring hits like "Step On" and "Kinky Afro." The album was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, capturing the hedonistic spirit of British youth culture at the time.

Happy Mondays were signed to the influential Factory Records label, and their sound and image became emblematic of the Madchester movement alongside bands such as The Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets. However, their chaotic lifestyle, drug use, and internal tensions contributed to the band's decline in the early 1990s.

After several breakups and reunions over the years, Happy Mondays have continued to perform and tour, maintaining a loyal fan base and a lasting impact on British music history. They are often credited with helping to bridge the gap between indie rock and dance music, paving the way for future acts in the Britpop and electronic scenes.
