Info for Jazz Sinfónico Mexicano

The UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vince Mendoza, presents a programme dedicated to Mexican symphonic jazz. The concert includes the Mexican premiere of Vince Mendoza’s *Partido alto*, a work based on the Brazilian rhythms from which it takes its name, commissioned by the Henry Mancini Institute. The programme will also feature the world premiere or symphonic premiere of works by composers from different generations: Noir by José Luis Esquivel, Monarcas by Jhoely Garay, Santa Fe by Mario Santos, El sueño de Anáhuac by Joselyn Vargas, Guapanguito by Rosino Serrano, Agave by Enrique Nery, Amalayón by José Gurría-Cárdenas and Minotauro by Antonio Sánchez. Also to be performed is El sazón de la abuela by Héctor Infanzón, a divertimento for orchestra premiered in Vienna in 2012, as well as Pinot noir by Eugenio Toussaint, a track from his album Oinos. Música para beber vino (2000), in which he explored the relationship between jazz and oenology. OFUNAM will feature a special guest appearance by drummer Antonio Sánchez, an international jazz icon, alongside other leading musicians from the national scene. This programme forms part of the celebrations for International Jazz Day, established by UNESCO in 2011 to recognise this genre as an artistic expression that promotes peace, intercultural dialogue and cooperation among peoples.

One of the most versatile and prolific composer–arranger–conductors of the last two decades, multi-Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza has written arrangements for a wide variety of pop and jazz artists, from Joni Mitchell, Sting, Melody Gardot, Elvis Costello and Bjork to Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Al Di Meola, Al Jarreau, Michael and Randy Brecker, Diana Krall and Gregory Porter. His compositions have appeared on recordings by the likes of saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist John Abercrombie, drummer Peter Erskine, vibraphonist Gary Burton, and singer Kurt Elling. As a leader, Mendoza has released 12 solo recordings including Epiphany (with the London Symphony Orchestra), Nights on Earth, 2021’s Award Winning “Freedom Over Everything” and his most recent Grammy nominated recording “Olympians” with the Metropole Orkest. He has 8 Grammy Awards and 38 nominations. He was also nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as “arranger of the year”.
