Hirofumi Fukai is a Japanese viola player (born in 1942). He was alto solo for the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and the NDR Sinfonieorchester in Hamburg. At the same time, Fukai pursued a solo career, playing the premieres of several works by contemporary composers such as Frank Michael Beyer, Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm.
His upcoming album of Viola Sonatas by Brahms and Hindemith is released on 20 March as part of DG’s debut series, which presents first or very early recordings by artists who went on to build considerable careers.
