Info for Exile to Hollywood

Violinist Isabelle Durin breathes new life into the heart of Hollywood music – in a fresh interpretation for violin and piano! “Exile To Hollywood” explores the golden age of film music through the stories of European composers who were forced into exile and played a decisive role in shaping the Hollywood sound. Isabelle Durin and Michael Ertzscheid breathe new life into Hollywood’s symphonic tradition for violin and piano through a subtle reinterpretation, where the post-Romantic legacy enters into dialogue with jazz and American modernism. From Korngold to Steiner, from Waxman to Rózsa – the album celebrates a music of freedom, cultural fusion and resilience. A captivating journey to the heart of the Golden Age, where exile becomes a source of creativity and brilliance.

In the early 20th century, the anti-Semitism of totalitarian regimes drove many Jewish composers from Central and Eastern Europe into exile. Fleeing pogroms and persecution, they settled in the United States—the new promised land—and made their way to Hollywood. Musicians such as Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman, Miklós Rózsa, Bronisław Kaper, Irving Berlin, and Dimitri Tiomkin made their mark there. Trained in European classical music, they blended it with American culture and jazz. Straddling the legacy of the “world of yesterday” and modernity, they shaped film music and left a lasting mark on the Golden Age (1930s–1960s).

Isabelle Durin
After studying at the CRR (The Regional Conservatory) of Versailles in the class of Alexandre Brussilovsky, Isabelle Durin obtained her diploma at the CNSM (Conservatoire national supérieur de musique) of Lyon in the class of Jean Estournet and Kazimierz Olechowski. She pursueda chamber music program at the CNSM of Paris in the classes of Alain Meunier and Michel Strauss. This musical itinerarywas simultaneously broadened by another university curriculum – more specifically Certificat of advanced study of philosophy at the Sorbonne, in Paris) -, which she considered a source of enrichment. In addition, her connection and appreciation of the symphonic repertoire lead her to join the Orchestre national d’ïle-de-France and to play at the Philharmonie de Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the salle Gaveau… In addition to her numerous performative activities, she broadened her passion to the organisation of the «Les Harmonies Estivales» festival and now at the château La Motte-Tillyas its artistic director. With the pianist Michaël Ertzscheid, Isabelle Durin released two records – Romantisme hébraïque in 2008 (Jade/Universal) and Mémoire et Cinéma (Paraty/Pias) in 2018 – both praised by the media – that allowed her to meet audiences during numerous concerts in France and aboard, including the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du judaïsme (Museum of Jewish Art and History) and the Mémorial de la Shoah (Holocaust Museum), Théâtre du Ranelagh in Paris, the Musée dauphinois the Musée de la résistance et de la déportation de l’Isère in Grenoble, the portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam, in London, Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Museum) and Oxford (Queen’s College), in Miami, in Romania (Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara and lași), during a tour in China, in the Budapest Holocaust Memorial Center. She worked with Alain Duault during a Radio Classique cruise for several recitals.

Michaël Ertzscheid
Pianist, chamber music musician, teacher and improviser, Michaël Ertzscheid studied in several conservatories (Toulouse, Paris, Boulogne, the CNSM or Conservatoire national supérieur de musique of Paris). Curious and insatiable, he took advantage of his 10 years of studies to acquire the richest possible musical background, meeting leading pedagogues (such as M.P. Siruguet, H. Cartier-Bresson, T. Escaich, A. Louvier, P.L. Aimard…) and reaping first prizes in piano, analysis, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, improvisation… Simultaneously, he attended numerous master classes and benefited from the advice of famous musicians (Arie Vardi, Leon Fleisher, Jean-François Heisser). He won the European Music Competition for Youth, the Yamaha Competition and a scholarship from the SACEM.

His constant passion for deciphering, accompaniment and the symphonic repertoire allowed him to obtain the first prize in the exacting class of Jean Koerner at the CNSM of Paris. This memorable encounter led him to work under the direction of Pierre Boulez, Kazushi Ōno, John Axelrod, Christoph Eschenbach, Péter Eötvös or François-Xavier Roth.

As a musician with a passion for teaching, sharing is at the heart of his activity. With a piano degree, he presently teaches piano at the Pôle supérieur d’enseignement artistique Paris in Boulogne-Billancourt and at the Regional conservatory of Boulogne-Billancourt. He also teaches didactic piano at the CNSM of Paris.
